Councillor fears rural population decline due to planning regulations

A Leitrim Councillor says many rural communities are struggling to survive due to planning regulations.

Fine Gael Councillor Sean McDermott fears the rules will prevent the likes of Leitrim from seeing a population increase as more people move out of urban centres due to remote working becoming more common place.

However, he says the availability of housing for sale or rent is almost non-existent with the situation getting worse due to the difficulties potential homeowners face in securing planning permission.

The Manorhamilton MD Councillor says a recent feature published in the Leitrim Observer which focused on the number of new students starting national schools provides evidence that many communities are declining in population.
