Letterkenny university hospital experiences worst ever September for overcrowding

Letterkenny University Hospital had their worst ever September for overcrowding.

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation are warning that many hospitals are ‘rapidly returning to the bad old days of overcrowding.’

Letterkenny had the third highest figure nationally where 821 patients were waiting for a bed, only behind University Hospital Limerick with 1,090 and Cork University Hospital with 1,094.

Figures from the INMO show there were 12 times as many patients waiting for a bed in Letterkenny University Hospital compared to September 2020 when there was 66.

Sligo University Hospital had 392 patients while a total of 8,414 were waiting on trolleys or chairs across all Irish hospitals for the month.

The figures follow four nurses in University Hospital Galway quitting over the conditions in the temporary emergency department.

Today, there are 45 patients waiting in Letterkenny and 18 in Sligo.
