Garavogue River needs updated floodgates



There are hopes the 12 penstocks along the Garavogue River will all be upgraded to prevent further flooding damage.

Fine Gael Cocunillor, Thomas Walsh, submitted a motion at yesterday’s Sligo County Council meeting seeking funding to upgrade the floodgates.

He says only two of the gates are automated, the others needing to be manually turned, and two of these have since ceased and are no longer operable.

He believes all 12 should be automated.

Councillor Walsh says the recent flooding around Aughamore is believed by locals to have been exacerbated due to the inadequate system:
