Government must subsidise student accommodation to solve crisis

A Sligo Councillor believes the government must subsidise affordable student accommodation and control rents to properly address the the crisis facing students across the region.

People Before Profit Councillor, Gino O’Boyle described the suggestion to some some students that they should look at renting a hotel rooms as ‘shameful.’

A recent survey by the Irish League of Credit Unions found almost half of students in the country are struggling to afford basic living expense with 40% stressing over rent or accommodation.

Councillor O’Boyle has been critical of the governments Housing For All plan particularly when it comes to, what he says, is the lack of rent control measures.

He says the current rent prices in Co. Sligo are unsustainable and government subsidies are needed going forward.
