System for issuing felling licenses ‘nonsensical’ says Sligo Councillor

A Sligo Councillor says it’s ‘absolutely ridiculous’ that while Ireland has sufficient timber for construction, it’s taking the government at least a year to issue a felling license.

Independent Councillor, Marie Casserly says there are over 4,500 felling licenses waiting to be issued.

A recent Construction Industry Federation report shows building materials have risen by 20% in recent times with builders having difficulty in sourcing materials in the country.

Imports of saw logs from Scotland have more than trebled since 2019.

Councillor Casserly believes the current system is ‘nonsensical’.
