Councillor says there’s a need for new honours system in Sligo

There’s been a call for a new system to be introduced in Sligo to honour people with exceptional achievements.

Sligo had the prestigious honour known as the Freedom of the Borough but conferring of this is no longer possible because of the abolition under 2014 legislation of the Borough of Sligo.

The borough council was previously known as Sligo Corporation; it’s abolition saw the ending of a 400 year old  institution that had existed in different forms.

With a variety of Sligo people now reaching global heights in a variety of areas, among them the Olympics and the fight against the Covid pandemic, Fianna Fail Councillor Donal Gilroy believes there is now a need for a new prestigious honours system to be instituted in Sligo.
