Commemoration of Twin Towers attack taking place in Ballymote



A commemoration marking the 20th anniversary of the Twin Towers attack in New York will take place this Saturday in Ballymote, Co. Sligo.

People are asked to gather at around 1.30pm at the US Civil War Monument which contains a steel beam from the towers.

At 1.45pm, the church bells will ring marking the time the first plane struck the World Trade Center.

Members of the Defence Forces, US Embassy representatives, Gardaí, the Fire Service and Ambulance Service will be in attendance.

Sligo County Cathaoirleach, Paul Taylor will lay a wreath while a video message will be broadcast from former Mayor of New York, Michael Bloomberg.

Among the victims of the attack was Kieran Gorman from Lavagh, Mullinabreena.

Former TD John Perry, who will MC the event, says it’s important we remember that ‘fateful morning’.
