Call for cemetery records to be digitised

A Sligo councillor believes the local authority should digitise all burial records for the county.

Fine Gael’s Thomas Walsh says the current paper-based system is outdated and by recording all records digitally, cemetery management will be vastly improved and reduce the risk of information not being recorded correctly or lost.

He also says the records should also be made available for the public to view similar to the likes of Clare, Kerry, Westmeath and Cork.

Speaking to OceanFM News, Councillor Walsh says there are many benefits to going digital and the records need to be safeguarded into the future.
