Pyrite a growing problem in Sligo houses

With an increasing number of houses in County Sligo — believed now to be in the hundreds — affected by defective building blocks due to the presence of pyrite, there are renewed calls to ensure the county is included in the Defective Concrete Blocks Scheme.

The issue was discussd at yesterday’s meeting of Sligo County Council as a result of a motion from West Sligo Independent Councillor Joe Queenan who asked for an update on Sligo’s inclusion in the pyrite redress scheme.

Sligo Sinn Fein Councillor Thomas Healy said Sligo must be included in any redress scheme, the same as neighbouring counties Donegal and Mayo.

Cllr Healy said the Sligo Pyrite Action Group also wanted to make a presentation to Sligo County Council so councillors could see the problems homeowners were facing.
