Funeral of Pat Hume takes place this morning

The funeral takes place today of Pat Hume, widow of the late SDLP leader and Nobel peace Prize laureate John Hume.

The ceremony will be in St Eugene’s Cathedral in Derry at 11am, where her husband’s funeral took place last year.

It will be closed to the public, but can be watched online via the church webcam.

She has been widely praised for the key role she played with her late husband in the life-long effort to find a political settlement to the Troubles in Northern Ireland.

She was with him on a number of visits to Sligo, including two trips — in 1997 and 2003 — to the Peace Park on the banks of the River Moy in Banada, near Tourlestrane in south Sligo.

Retired school teacher Sean Owens, of the Banada Development Association, recalls meeting the late Pat Hume all those years ago.
