State has adequate land for construction of housing

A Sligo Leitrim TD has accused the government of engaging in ‘deflective tactics’ by calling on the church to provide property for the building of housing.

It recently emerged that the minister for housing Daire O’ Brien had recently written to the head of the Catholic Church in Ireland Archbishop Eamon Martin requesting additional property for the state to build land on.

The government are due to unveil the ‘Housing For All’ policy this week – which will aim to build 33 thousand new homes every year until 2025.

Sinn Fein Spokesperson on Justice Deputy Martin Kenny says that many local authorities have lands at their disposal where housing could be constructed but have the resources to construct houses.
