Mixed fortunes for north Leitrim clubs on opening weekend of Leitrim championship

There were mixed fortunes for the north Leitrim clubs in Saturday evening’s opening matches of the 2021 Connacht Gold senior football championship.

Glencar/Manorhamilton, who’ve had a poor 2021 to date, were beaten by last year’s county finalists St Mary’s by seven points in their opening Group 2 match at Boggaun.

Melvin Gaels trip to Gortletteragh was more positive as they beat the recently crowned 2020 intermediate champions by a similar scoreline.

The holders Mohill enjoyed a big win over Allen Gaels in their opening Group 1 match, running in six goals at Philly McGuinness Park.

And – Fenagh/St Caillin’s beat Sean O’Heslin’s by a goal.

The senior championship in Leitrim this year again comprises 10 teams who are divided into two groups of five.

The top four clubs in each of the groups will progress to the quarter-finals.
