School class sizes need to be addressed says local Councillor and teacher

School class sizes needs to be addressed according to a local Councillor and teacher.

Figures released to Sinn Fein following a parliamentary question found the average size of a classroom in Sligo and Leitrim in 2020 was 22.6 which is above the EU average of 20.

Sligo/Leitrim Sinn Fein TD, Martin Kenny said in Sligo, there were 35 children in one classroom last year.

According to figures from the Department of Education, around 100,000 children in primary school around the country are currently in classes of more than 30 pupils.

Sligo Independent Councillor, Marie Casserly who is also a teacher at St. Mary’s College in Ballisodare says a smaller classroom means more one to one time.
