Mona misses out on 200m semi-final despite new national record

Sligo swimmer Mona McSharry produced yet another impressive swim on Wednesday in the heats of the women’s 200 metres breaststroke, as she finished second in a new Irish senior record time of 2mins 25.08secs.

McSharry, swimming in heat 1 finished just behind Kristyna Horska of the Czech Republic.

The Grange girl was actually leading the race with 50 minutes to go, but she was pipped by the Czech swimmer at the finish.

Despite her fine time, it was just outside the top 16 places from the four heats, so McSharry just misses out on a semi-final place.

She finished 20th overall in the 200m breaststroke, having entered the Games ranked 28th in this event.
