14-man Donegal withstand Monaghan rally to reach Ulster semi-final

The summer may be over for the county’s senior men’s and under-20 footballers – but Luke Barrett’s minor team kept the county flag flying in Clones on Wednesday evening with a spirited 1-9 to 0-10 quarter-final success against Monaghan.

Luke McGlynn’s early first-half penalty would prove to be a crucial score as Donegal backs were against the wall once Ethan Friel was red-carded shortly before half-time.

Naomh Columba’s Michael Callaghan once again made an important contribution when introduced as a substitute, scoring two points at crucial stages.

Goalkeeper Aaron Cullen (Aodh Ruadh) also caught the eye in goals with a couple of vital saves over the hour.

Monaghan pushed hard for the levelling scores in the closing stages – but Donegal held firm to set up an Ulster semi-final meeting with Armagh.

The Orchard County knocked holders Derry out of the championship on Wednesday evening.
