Funeral of Vera Dwyer to take place today



The funeral is taking place today of the south Sligo woman who was the world’s longest-living single lung transplant survivor.

With only days to live on May 18th 1998, and in what the first operation of its kind, Vera Dwyer, Carrowcrory, Keash, had the history-making surgery at Harefield Hospital in London.

Up until then, all lung transplants were done in conjunction with the transplant of another organ, such as a heart.,
Afterwards, she was an ardent advocate for organ donation.

The funeral of the Castleplunkett, Co Roscommon native,who was an inspirtion to many, takes place today, with mass in Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church in Culfadda at 12 noon, followed by burial in Knockbrack ceemtery.
