Councillor says some people will be paying less in property tax in coming year

The Cathaoirleach of the Donegal Municipal District of Donegal County Council says some people will end up this year paying less property tax than last year.

Fine Gael Councillor Barry Sweeney was speaking after councillors agreed to keep the property tax rate at 15%, the same as last year.

Each year, the rate goes back to a zero baseline, leading some councillors to argue that yesterday’s decision was a 15% increase, despite it being maintained at last year’s level.

Cllr Sweeney says it’s not an increase.

Cllr. Sweeney says the tax will raise €1.7m, which the council needs in order to get additional money in matching funding for a variety of local projects and improvements.
