Mona McSharry reaches Olympic final

Sligo swimmer Mona McSharry has qualified for the final of the women’s 100 metres breaststroke at the Tokyo Olympics.

The Grange girl finished fourth in her semi-final in the early hours of Monday morning, clocking a time of 1min 06.59secs.

That was quick enough to qualify eight fastest for the Olympic final.

She gets through by one hundred of a second ahead of Chelsea Hodges of Australia.

McSharry is just the second Irish swimmer ever to qualify for an Olympic final.

The 20-year-old is competing at her first summer Olympics – and has reached an Olympic final at the first attempt.

The final of the women’s 100 metres breaststroke takes place on Tuesday.
