Hospital apologises to Leitrim boy for failures in care during birth

A hospital has apologised to the family of a 6 year old Co Leitrim boy for failures in care during his birth.

Lucas Walker of Carrick-on-Shannon suffered a brain injury during his birth at Portiuncula University Hospital in Ballinasloe in 2014.

He had, through his mother, sued the HSE over his care at the time of his birth.

Yesterday, the High Court action was settled for €450,000, and the vast bulk of the money will go towards private speech and language therapies for Lucas.

Family solicitor, Damien Tansey of Damien Tansey Solicitors of Embankment, Sligo, says it was important that Lucas has access to such therapies now, and not at some time in the future.
