Cillian O’Connor set to miss Sligo game

Mayo are set to be without their leading scorer Cillian O’Connor for Saturday week’s Connacht senior football championship quarter-final against Sligo at Markievicz Park.

The Ballintubber clubman will have a ‘procedure’ on an achilles tendon injury, which he picked up during Mayo’s Division 2 semi-final victory against Clare last Sunday.

O’Connor scored 1-4 in that game before coming off injured.

O’Connor is the football championship’s all-time record scorer, a mantle he took over from Colm Cooper in 2019 when Mayo lost to Kerry in an All-Ireland quarter-final round robin game.

A statement from Mayo GAA on Wednesday read:

“Following last Sunday’s NFL game versus Clare GAA all injured players received further assessment with the Mayo medical team.

“Cillian O’Connor sustained an Achilles tendon injury that will require a procedure this week.

“We wish him well and look forward to seeing him on the playing field again as soon as possible.”

Sligo host Mayo at Markievicz Park on Saturday, June 26th, at 4:30pm.

The game will be broadcast live in full on Ocean FM in association with Oates Breheny Mortgage Services.
