Sligo County Council Cathaoirleach Cllr. Dara Mulvey has launched the Gum Litter taskforce’s education campaign in Sligo.
For the last 14 years, the national campaign has been successful in encouraging the public to correctly dispose of their chewing gum.
In 2019, 88% of people said they always disposed of gum correctly; that was up from 54% when the campaign began.
Meanwhile, the proportion of gum as a percentage of litter has decreased by 64% in the last 13 years.
Cllr Mulvey says that with outdoor dining now in vogue, it’s now more important than ever that people do not drop their gum on the footpaths, streets and roads.
