Level of domestic violence increased in Leitrim during the pandemic

A Garda Superintendent in Leitrim has confirmed that there has been a significant increase in the level of domestic violence in the County during the Covid-19 pandemic.

This week’s meeting of the Leitrim Joint Policing Committee was told that the number of investigations into domestic violence incidents has risen by 65% over the past year.

The increase is in line with the increase being reported by other Garda Divisions across the Country.

Superintendent Christopher Grogan from Carrick-on-Shannon Garda station addressed the subject at yesterday’s joint policing meeting in Leitrim and acknowledged that it’s one particular area which has required more garda resources since the start of the pandemic in early 2020.
