Tourism boost for north west with beaches securing blue flags

County Donegal has the largest number of Blue Flags in the country.

The Blue Flag is one of the world’s most recognised eco-labels, signifying top quality beaches, marinas and inland bathing areas.

Only beaches that meet specific criteria relating to water quality, beach management, environemntal information and safety achieve the accolade.

Rosses Point in Sligo is among six beaches in the country that received dual award status with both a Blue Flag and a Green Coast Award.

Also known as the Green Flag, it recognises beaches for their clean environment, excellent water quality and natural beauty.

The flags at Rosses Point will be flown when coastal protection works taking place at the Second Beach are finished.

Green Coast Awards have also gone to Streedagh and Dunmoran.

Bundoran Tourism Officer Shane Smyth has paid tribute to the hard work of the staff of Donegal County Council in securing the blue flag for Bundoran for another year.
