Stay & Spend scheme failed hospitality sector.

A Leitrim Councillor and Publican is claiming that the Government’s ‘stay and spend scheme’ which was aimed at kick-starting the hospitality sector between October last year and April this year has failed miserably in providing assistance to the sector.

Over 10,800 claims were made under the scheme.

Latest figures from Revenue show 791,000 euro in tax credits were claimed under the much maligned ‘stay and spend imitative’.

The government had expected it would cost 270 million euro.

While the protracted lockdown is being blamed, the scheme was also considered a complex way of boosting the sector and not user friendly.

Independent Leitrim Councillor Felim Gurn says the funding which was earmarked for the hospitality sector and not drawn down should be used to support business that are reopening over the coming weeks.
