Banks should be fined for failing to maintain repossessed buildings

It’s expected that calls will be made at a meeting of the Manorhamilton Municipal District of Leitrim Council later today for Legislation to be introduced which would allow fines to be issued to Banks that fail to maintain and upkeep buildings they have repossessed.

Independent Councillor Felim Gurn says many of these buildings have fallen into disrepair and as a result are an eyesore in towns and villages across the country.

The Council in Leitrim have already a 25% rates levy in place for vacant buildings.

Speaking to Ocean FM news Councillor Gurn says if Banks had to pay fines it would encourage them to maintain the buildings they repossess and less eager to repossess buildings.
