Killybegs Fishermen’s Organisation critical of Sea Fisheries Protection Authority

The Killybegs Fishermen’s Organisation is among a number of fishery and processors’ groups saying the Sea Fisheries Protection Authority is not fit for purpose.

The authority was established for the regulation of the sea-fisheries and sea food production sectors.

A joint Oireachtas committee hearing on the issue is taking place today.

Fisheries groups, including the Killybegs Fishermen’s Organisation, say the failure of the authority to work effectively has ‘wreaked havoc’ on the industry, the most recent example involving fishermen who were hit by changes in practices around weighing catches on piers, based on a European Commission decision.
