Calls for community groups to be allowed buy bank buildings

Next week’s meeting of Leitrim County Council will hear calls for the local authority to contact the Minister for Community and Rural Development Heather Humphreys and the Tanáiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Leo Varadkar TD to consider a funding scheme which would enable community groups to purchase and develop former bank buildings.

Manorhamilton Independent Councillor Felim Gurn will table a motion call for such a move.

He says Community groups with a proven track record in enterprise and community development could be provided with funding opportunities to negotiate with Banks which own such buildings to purchase and develop bank branches due to close in September.

Cllr Gurn says these building could be turned into rural working office hubs while maintain ATM services in towns which no long have banks in operation.
