Another Irish record for Mona McSharry

Sligo swimmer Mona McSharry set a new Irish record for the 200 metres breaststroke on Friday morning when winning her heat at the Irish National Olympic Team Trials in Dublin.

Her time of 2mins 25.92secs shaved almost two seconds off the previous record.

However, it was just outside the Olympic ‘A’ qualifying standard of 2mins 25.52secs.

Listen to her postrace interview with Joanne O’Riordan here:

McSharry will have another opportunity to achieve the Tokyo time when she swims in the semi-finals this evening (5:30pm).

The Grange woman has already qualified for the Olympics in the women’s 100 metres breaststroke.
