Maternity leave for councillors would attract more women to politics.

A Sligo councillor says the provision of maternity leave for councillors would help and encourage more women to become involved in politics.

Former Sligo mayor and council cathaoirleach Cllr Rosaleen O Grady this week called on the council to support Minister Peter Burke in setting up a working group to examine the provision of maternity leave for county and city councillors.

Cllr O Grady says dealing with this issue at a local and national level is ‘hugely important.’
