HSE announces ‘Social Prescribing’ for Sligo, Leitrim, Cavan and Monaghan

We hear much about prescribing medicine for our ills but how about social prescribing?

The HSE has announced that the Social Prescribing for Health and Well-Being Programme is now available in seven new areas across Sligo, Leitrim, Cavan and Monaghan.

It will complement already existing social prescribing projects in Donegal, which have been in operation for several years.

The programme aims to support the health and wellbeing of people by using community-based activities and supports and could include walking groups, gardening, dancing, art, on-line engagement, links with sports partnerships, e-library services, men’s and women’s sheds and other creative activities.

Peter Walker, who leads the programme in this HSE region, has been telling Ocean FM what exactly is ‘social prescribing’.
