UUP councillor’s plan for dual carriageway from Belfast to Enniskillen, and onto Sligo

Councillors in Fermanagh are putting forward an ambitious plan for a dual carriageway from Belfast to Enniskillen and from there to Sligo.

A meeting of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council heard the plan would open up the whole north west of Ireland, providing a speedy route from Belfast to Fermanagh, and from there to the Wild Atlantic Way and the west coast.

A motion putting forward the plan to upgrade the A4 route was proposed by Ulster Unionist Party Councillor Victor Warrington and was passed with cross-party support.

The A4 goes for almost 70 miles from Portadown to Belcoo, through Armagh, Tyrone and Fermanagh. Although once being a single continuous route, it is now split into two completely divided stretches.

Cllr Warrington says it’s about dealing with regional imbalance when it comes to investment in roads and regional connectivity.
