Training places for doctors in Sligo and Letterkenny university hospitals to be axed

Eleven training places for doctors in Sligo and Letterkenny university hospitals will be cut next July, it’s been claimed.

Now, a group of medical students are calling on the Minister for Health to reverse the decision.

Dr Cormac Duff, a trainee paediatric doctor who spent last year in Sligo University Hospital, says that next July, Letterkenny University Hospital will lose seven of its current 23 intern doctors while the Sligo hospital will lose four.

Dr Duff, who’s now working in the Rotunda Hospital in Dublin, says that last year, 350 additional intern jobs were created, giving every graduating doctor the chance to stay and work in Ireland.

But this year, because of the pandemic and the health crisis, it was decided not to offer the additional jobs to the 2021 interns.
