Concern over rising Covid figures

There were over 280 new cases of the Covid virus in Sligo and Donegal in the past 14 days.

There were fewer than five in Leitrim.

Figures released yesterday evening showed there were 39 new cases yesterday in Donegal, 5 in Sligo and fewer than five in Leitrim.

In the past 14 days there have been 231 new cases in Donegal and 51 in Sligo.

A leading public health expert says it will take days before we can say we’re not heading into another serious Covid-19 outbreak.

Nationally, 543 more people have tested positive for the virus and there’s been 16 additional deaths, with officials warning progress in driving down the level of infection might be “stalling”.

Anthony Staines, Professor of Health Systems at DCU, says between 1,500 and 2,000 contact tracers should be hired urgently.

He says restrictions on movement just aren’t enough on their own.
