Councillors fear reduction of powers in deciding on land use

Councillors in the north west have been voicing their concerns over proposals that would see land held by local authorities handed over to the Land Development Agency.

The issue was down for discussion at this week’s meetings of Sligo and Leitrim county councils.

Independent councillors Des Guckian in Leitrim and Michael Clarke in Sligo have called on their local authorities to make submissions to the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage outlining their ‘complete opposition’ to the proposed provisions of the Land Development Agency Bill 2021.

Cllr Clarke says it’s important there is local input into decisions on land use.

Cllr Guckian says the proposal would result in a further erosion of councillors’ powers and their ability to represent their communities.
