Late Joe Burke’s links to Sligo recalled

Musicians and music lovers throughout the north west are mourning the death of the late great button accordion player Joe Burke.

The 81-year old Galway native had been a visitor to the Morrison Festival in Riverstown and the Joe Mooney Summer School in Drumshanbo.

He also played fiddle, tin whistle, flute and uilleann pipes.

He was a founding member of the Leitrim Ceili Band and toured the U.S. in 1961.

Well-known Sligo musician Daithi Gormley was a pupil of the late Joe Burke.

Martin Enright, chairman of the Sligo CCE County Board, has been telling Ocean FM News of the many links Joe Burke had with Sligo and its music.
