New banking models on the way for rural communities



A Sligo Councillor has expressed concern over recent reports linking a merger between Bank of Ireland and An Post.

 

It’s understood that Bank of Ireland is reviewing its branch network, which is leading to fears it is set to close branches in many smaller towns.

 

The bank currently has 265 branches in towns and villages.

 

Sligo/Drumcliff, Fianna fail Councillor Donal Gilroy says he fears branches will closed in many smaller towns and villages.

 

 

Cllr Gilroy says he would welcome a banking service for rural communities through the Post Office network, however he has urged An Post to explore more direct links with the credit union movement:
