Concern expressed over British variant of Covid-19

The Department of Health have confirmed that 34 more people have died from Covid-19.

650 additional cases of the virus were also reported yesterday.  There were 12 new cases in Donegal, less than 5 in Sligo and none in Leitrim.

180, 192 people have now received their first dose of the Covid-19 vaccination. 91,750 have received their second jabs by this stage.

Yesterday’s figures also reported that 831 COVID-19 patients are hospitalised from Covid-19, of which 154 are in ICU.

There are 14 people in Sligo University Hospital being treated for the virus with one in ICU.

13 people are receiving treatment in Letterkenny university Hospital with four in ICU.

The Taoiseach says health officials are ‘hugely concerned’ as the British variant now accounts for 90 per cent of Covid-19 cases.

It comes as the death toll from the virus exceeded 4,000 here yesterday, and 6,000 on the island of Ireland.

Dr Gerald Barry, from UCD, says the decline of cases may slow down in the coming weeks
