Agri Week February 12th 2021

Horrific dog attacks on sheep are a regular occurrence at this time of year.  With sheep now about to lamb, dog attacks can have particularly serious consequences, as many sheep pick lamb, suffer serious injuries or in some cases lose their lives.

One of these attacks occurred last week in the Streedagh area of Sligo.  We find out the details on this week’s show.

Back in May of last year forest fires caused extensive damage in the Culleens and Gleneaskey areas of Sligo.

Now it’s emerged that Property owners have received bills for the services of fire fighters when it came to the attempts in trying to control those fires.

The amounts due vary but are believed to be significant in some cases, local landowners are refusing to pay the bills and claim that this is the first time the local authority have sought payment for the fire brigade dealing with such a situation.  We discuss the matter on this week’s programme.

Calls are made on the Minister for Agriculture to step up and be more pro-active in finding a solution for those farmers affected by the landslide on Shass Mountain close to Drumkeerin in County Leitrim.

The Sligo Leitrim TD Martin Kenny claims both he and Local Councillor Padraig Fallon have been contacted by a number of distressed farmers who’s lands are negatively impacted following the landslide.

The farmers are in particular concerned in relation to their applications for the ANC/BPS schemes.  Deputy martin Kenny will discuss the topic on the show.
