Post-Brexit animal-based food checks suspended at Larne and Belfast ports.

Concerns for staff safety has resulted in the suspension of post-Brexit animal-based food checks at Larne and Belfast ports.

It comes after graffiti opposing the Irish Sea border was painted in some loyalist areas of Northern Ireland in recent days.

Mid and East Antrim Council withdrew staff from Brexit inspection duties at Larne Port earlier this week following an “upsurge in sinister and menacing behaviour”.

The decision was made following an “upsurge in sinister and menacing behaviour in recent weeks”, as graffiti appeared last month referencing tensions about the Northern Ireland Protocol and calling port staff “targets”.

The council said the ongoing situation has caused “extreme distress and worry to staff”, and it had no option but to withdraw 12 staff from their duties.

Food checks at Belfast and Larne ports were suspended yesterday evening following the move.
