Why Sligo’s prehistoric landscape should become an UNESCO World Heritage Site

Sligo county councillors have been hearing this morning why Sligo’s Stone Age prehistoric landscape should be designated an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Strandhill-based archaeologist Dr Stefan Bergh, from the the School of Geography and Irish Studies in NUI Galway, says the passage tombs of County Sligo are an extraordinary example of Neolithic architecture and ritual, with few, if any, international counterparts.

A presentation was made to Sligo councillors at their meeting this morning by Dr Robert Hensey, who is chairperson of the Sligo Neolithic Landscapes Group.

He told Ocean FM News what his group is looking for and its significance.
