Barnier pledges Irish industrial sectors will not suffer

The European Commission says it will do all it can to ensure no industrial sectors in Ireland lose out in the short term because of Brexit.

The comments were made by EU Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier after he was presented with ‘The European of the Year’ award by the European Movement in Ireland yesterday.

Sligo/Leitrim TD and former MEP Marian Harkin recently called for monies from the EU Brexit fund to be spent in regions worst affected by Britain’s departure from the EU.

The Independent deputy has told the Dáil that the intent of the EU Commission is that the fund should help regions, areas and local communities worst hit.

Michel Barnier says a contingency fund is in place but stressed it will not be business as usual for Irish firms trading with Britain because of the additional import and export documentation which will be necessary.
