Need for permanent reinstatement of cross-border health scheme

A Fianna Fail senator is calling for a cross-border healthcare scheme that ended after Brexit to be permanently reinstated.

The Department of Health has confirmed that a new temporary scheme called the Northern Ireland Planned Healthcare Scheme became operational from January 1st for 12 months.

It followed the ending of the hugely successful EU Cross Border Healthcare Directive.

The temporary scheme now in place enables persons resident in the State to access and be reimbursed by the HSE for private healthcare in Northern Ireland, provided such healthcare is publicly available within Ireland.

However, Monaghan Senator Robbie Gallagher says it’s one of the unforeseen consequences of Brexit.
