28 Garda trainees, reserves coming to help out in NW

Twenty-eight extra gardai are coming to the north west to support the policing of Level 5 restrictions.

It follows reports earlier this week of more than 70 gardai in the region off work due to illness or exposure to Covid-19.

An Garda Siochana has now announced that 140 Garda trainees and reserves are being sent to different areas of the country to help out.

The 28 coming to the north west are made up of 16 Garda members and 12 Garda reserves.

Garda Commissioner Drew Harris says they will help ensure community policing, crime detection and prevention as well as the policing of public health regulations are carried out efficiently.
