Sigerson Cup called off

Gaelic football’s premier third level competition, the Sigerson Cup, will not take place during this academic year because of the escalating Covid situation.

The GAA’s Higher Education committee has confirmed that both the Sigerson and hurling’s Fitzgibbon Cup have been postponed until the autumn at the earliest.

It’s understood Croke Park will look at potentially staging the 2021 competitions in the first semester of the 2021/2022 academic year – but there are no guarantees that this will happen.

The decision affects both the IT Sligo and Letterkenny IT (LYIT) senior’s men’s gaelic footballers.

LYIT broke new ground in the 2020 competitions when they reached the semi-finals of the Sigerson Cup for the first time in the college’s history (beating IT Sligo in the last eight).

Last year’s Sigerson was won by DCU, who were captained by St Naul’s clubman Brendan McCole.
