Busy start to 2021 for Sligo/Leitrim Mountain Rescue Team

It has been a busy start to the New Year for the Sligo/Leitrim Mountain Rescue Team.

It follows what was one of the team’s busiest years in 2020.

In the past week, the team has come to the rescue of a lone walker who became disorientated in snow and low cloud on Cuilcagh Mountain in Cavan.

The next day, team members had a call-out to two walkers who became stranded in the Gleniff Horseshoe in north Sligo due to icy conditions. Gardai and the Coast Guard helicopter also attended.

Mountain Rescue Team PRO Alan Sayers says more people have been tempted by the recent dry, clear weather to go into upland areas.

However, he warns that at higher altitudes, the weather can quickly deteriorate.

He also pointed out that under Covid regulations, people should not be more than 5km from their homes.
