Gardaí and the emergency services were called to the scene of an incident near Easkey, in west Sligo, on Wednesday.
It involved what gardai have described as the accidental discharge of a firearm.
A man in his 70s was injured and taken to Galway University Hospital for treatment.
Gardai, the ambulance and the Coast Guard helicopter attended.
