Schools to remain closed in Northern Ireland

Schools are to remain closed in Northern Ireland for the foreseeable future.

The Stormont Executive will meet today to finalise a tightening of the current six-week lockdown.

It will include an extended period of remote learning and new rules on travel.

First Minister Arlene Foster says stay-at-home laws will also be re-introduced, after being in place during the first wave.

It is expected that the range of increased restrictions will be announced after the Executive reconvenes this afternoon.

Ministers in the North took part in an urgent meeting yesterday in response to soaring numbers of coronavirus cases. The First Minister also expressed disappointment at the number of gatherings and confirmed that they would be contacting the police in relation to enforcement.

Almost 100 house parties were broken up by police in Northern Ireland over the last week despite strict rules against indoor gatherings.
