Sligoman says RTE New Year segment was ‘absolute insult’

A Sligo man says it’s not enough for RTE to apologise for a New Year’s Eve programme segment that many Christians, and Catholics in particular, have found offensive.

Tommy Banks says the segment, which portrayed God as a rapist, must also be taken down from the RTE player.

The Catholic primate of Ireland, Archbishop Eamon Martin, described the broadcast as ‘blasphemous’ and ‘deeply offensive.’

The Association of Catholic Priests said it was ‘provocative insensitivity’, and called on RTE to review its policies and approaches to reporting on the Christian faith.

Atheist Ireland has defended RTE, saying it was entitled to broadcast jokes that some people might find offensive.

Sligoman Tommy Banks described the segment as ‘an insult.’
