heated exchange in Dail over nursing students pay

There were heated exchanges in the Dail today over the student nurses pay dispute.

Donegal Sinn Fein TD, Pearse Doherty, raised the issue with Tanaiste leo Varadkar this afternoon where he highlighted a number of issues from nursing students such as instances of being alone with terminally ill patients.

The government are to carry out a review into pay and to see what instances there are of people being forced to carry out work they aren’t fully trained or supervised for.

Deputy Doherty says he has been told by healthcare professionals that if it wasn’t for student nurses, the health care system would collapse.

Tanaiste Leo Varadkar says the recent nursing students bill that was defeated in the Dail was designed to ‘make the government look bad.’
