Harkin: ‘Process’ of appointing judges is only ‘a pretence’

A Sligo/Leitrim TD says Seamus Woulfe must be the last person to be appointed a judge using the current system.

Independent Marian Harkin’s comments come amid calls for the Tanaiste to clarify his conversations with the Justice Minister on the appointment of Mr Woulfe to the Supreme Court.

Helen McEntee says Leo Varadkar told her Mr Woulfe would make a good judge, before she had seen the other candidates.

Deputy Harkin says the situation has laid bare what she described as the ‘pretence’ that there is actually a process for the appointment of judges.
